Matsuri Kazamaki is a boy belonging to a Clan of Exorcist Ninjas; the Kazamaki Clan, and he is heir to said Clan through his grandfather.The NinjaExorcist clans are in charge of exorcising creatures called AYAKASHI, which are invisible to the human eye, and can only be seen by a few specific people, but which can cause disturbances and destruction in their wake. On the other hand, Suzu Kanade, Matsuri's childhood friend, for some reason can also see the Ayakashi and in fact, she really likes playing with them, although she often ends up putting herself at risk for trusting them too much.
That's why Matsuri is the one who is in charge of always protecting her from the problems she gets into because of blindly trusting the Ayakashi. One day, Suzu encounters an Ayakashi Cat and starts playing with him, until she and Matsuri get into a fight because he doesn't like her playing carelessly. Later, the Ayakashi Cat reveals himself to be "Shirogane", the Ayakashi Sovereign, who wants to devour Suzu for being an "Ayakashi Priestess", and therefore a delicacy to him. Until she is saved by Matsuri and he seals Shirogane's powers in a scroll, making the latter unable to fully use his power. But not before launching a Gender Change Technique at Matsuri, so he transforms into a girl.
